Staying in Cairo

Cairo is vast, loud and ancient in a way that few cities can match. The Pyramids of Giza sit at the city's western edge, the Egyptian Museum holds treasures that would fill a dozen visits, and the streets of Islamic Cairo are a sensory experience unlike anything in Europe. It is not a city that does things by halves.

For all its intensity, Cairo can be surprisingly affordable. Five-star hotels overlooking the Nile come in at prices that would buy a mid-range room in London, and the food - from street-side koshari to rooftop dining - is excellent across every budget. The best approach is to lean into it: the traffic, the noise, the hospitality and the history are all part of the same package.

Where to stay in Cairo

Downtown (Wust El Balad)

The colonial-era city centre around Tahrir Square, with faded belle-époque buildings, the Egyptian Museum and a gritty, authentic energy. Central and well connected.

Zamalek

An island in the Nile with a calmer, leafier feel. Good restaurants, galleries and hotels, and a short taxi ride from everything else.

Giza

The west bank, home to the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Stay here if the Pyramids are the priority and you want to see them at sunrise without the commute.

Heliopolis

A northeastern suburb near the airport with wide boulevards and some of the city's better-value five-star hotels. Convenient for arrivals and departures.
