Geneva sits at the western tip of Lake Geneva with the Alps visible across the water and the Jura mountains behind. It is a small, international city - home to the United Nations, the Red Cross and more NGOs than most countries - and that cosmopolitan character shapes everything from the dining to the pace of the streets.
The Jet d'Eau fountain on the lake is the postcard shot, but the real charm is in the Old Town's narrow lanes, the Plainpalais flea market and the cross-border ease of popping into France for lunch. Like Zurich, it is not cheap, but the setting is hard to beat and the city rewards a slow, walking-pace visit.
