Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of towers, turrets and cobblestones that looks like it belongs in a film set. But step outside the walls and you find a modern Baltic capital with a serious digital culture, good food and prices that feel genuinely reasonable by northern European standards.
The city is compact and walkable, with the harbour, the Old Town and the creative Telliskivi quarter all within easy reach of each other. It is also one of the easiest cities to reach from Helsinki - the ferry takes two hours - making it a natural add-on to a Nordic trip or a rewarding weekend break in its own right.
