Staying in Venice

Venice is unlike anywhere else - a city built on water, with no cars, no buses and no roads in the usual sense. St Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge and the canals are as extraordinary as you have heard. It is also one of Europe's most expensive cities to stay in, and one where the booking platform you choose makes a real difference to what you pay.

Most affordable hotels sit in Mestre on the mainland, a short train ride from the islands. A handful of well-priced options do exist in Venice itself. The hotels below are well-reviewed and listed at honest rates.

Where to stay in Venice

San Marco

The postcard centre of Venice, with the Basilica, Doge's Palace and the main piazza. The most expensive area, but unbeatable for atmosphere.

Dorsoduro

Art galleries, the Accademia and quieter canals. A favourite with repeat visitors who want Venice without the crush.

Cannaregio

The old Jewish quarter, less touristy and more residential. Good restaurants and a calmer pace near the train station.

Mestre

On the mainland, connected to Venice by a short train ride. Much better value and a practical base for exploring the lagoon.
