Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and one of Europe's most liveable, set where the River Limmat meets the lake against a backdrop of distant Alps. It is expensive - there is no getting around that - but the quality of everything from the public transport to the tap water is striking, and a short break here can be more rewarding than its banking reputation suggests.
The Old Town either side of the Limmat is medieval and walkable, the lake is swimmable in summer, and the west side of the city around Zurich West has turned old industrial buildings into restaurants, galleries and rooftop bars. It is a city that works well for people who value things being done properly.

The historic core split by the Limmat, with cobbled lanes, churches, and most of the city's landmarks. Both sides are walkable and full of small shops.
A former industrial area now home to the best nightlife, restaurants in converted warehouses, and design-forward hotels. The 25hours and Frau Gerolds Garten are here.
South along the lake with swimming spots, parks and a quieter residential feel. Good for a lakeside stay away from the centre.
The east bank of the Old Town, sometimes called Dörfli. Narrow streets, bars, bookshops and the university quarter. Lively in the evenings.
